Horribly presented site! Other than a simple road sign, the sight of significance is can be easily overlooked...the hangers how er ever are quite impressive!
Very moving memorial to the Hindenburg and the end of Zeppelin passenger travel in the 20th Century. Interestingly, other airships still fly here - see my aerodrome photos of around the Lakehurst Air Force and Navy Base below.
The Hindenberg memorial tour is not an easy, last-minute trip. This requires planning, reservations, and security clearance - as you enter a working military base. I didn't know what to expect, but I was very pleased by the tour. The Lakehurst Historical society really go out of their way to give an informative and interesting tour. I was very touched by the personal details and stories portrayed on that day,. And I was intrigued by the impressively packed museum located in the hanger.
If you have a slight interest in this history - or any interest in military history - make this tour happen! The POW-MIA collection (and tales) were very moving.
This place was very touching about history, since my dad's Uncle was there when the crash happened, and I got see the memorial.
The memorial is on an active military base, and the website says you must be registered at least two weeks in advance to take a tour.
I haven't seen it close up, but seen from the freeway it is an impressively large building.
